The Coral Sea

Legendary artist Patti Smith and My Bloody Valentine s Kevin Shields are set to release a double disc set of their live performance of The Coral Sea on their own PASK imprint. The Coral Sea is Patti Smith s posthumous homage to her friend and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and the title to her 1997 book. Kevin Shields accompanies her on guitars and effects and creates a haunting backdrop to the spoken prose. The love recordings were made June 22nd 2005 and September 12th 2006 respectively at sold out performances at the QEH in London. The set will run almost two hours with a different stylistic approach to each performance. The UK s Guardian upon reviewingthe 2005 performance gave it 5 stars and called it magical. One criticsaid of the live performance: A kind of screaming requiem, The Coral Sea describes Mapplethorpe s terminal illness. Intense, layered electronics surged to a discordant climax as Patti Smith read her poem, the words sailing over the noise like an ocean liner, with the black and white video showing the ocean, the liner and the grey twilight of grief. The poem tells the story of M(Mapplethorpe) on a final voyage to see the stars of the Southern Cross beforehe dies.

Now That We're Waiting

With influences ranging from Iceland's Sigur Ros to Necrophagist, and from Petra to With Blood Comes Cleansing, it's no wonder that Settle The Sky has such a unique sound. This six piece Metalcore outfit from Ohio is fighting their way out of the ordinary in the metalcore world. (if)

Their ninth studio album features twelve tracks riddled with emotional stress and turmoil. Themes of happiness, sadness, confusion, loss, and understanding run throughout, but it's not a concept album. Each track tells its own story. Their mix of classical, electronic, and rock elements couple with powerfully stunning vocals to deliver a message straight from the heart to the soul. Heartwarmingly sad, yet beautiful.

Changes

The contemporary trio One Alternative is at once classically inspired and thoroughly modern, making music they call "acoustic fusion"--a blend of horn and guitars that recalls chamber orchestras, the Paul Winter Consort, and the mathematical playfulness of popular jazz. Changes is an otherwise chronological retrospective of One Alternative's work that begins with the disc's sole new composition, aptly titled "Changes," on which band constants Mark Oppenlander and Jill Haley weave an intricately intimate dance on 12-string and oboe, respectively. The baker's dozen following are originals (save for a rendition of Bach's version of "Ave Maria") taken in clusters from previous albums, beginning with their 1985 debut, Greenlawn, through 1996's Yet to Be. Haley's warmly expressive tones are particularly evident on "Holiday" (from 1990's Shadows), an exquisitely gleeful meditation on joy on which Oppenlander's guitar sings like a trickling brook. Elsewhere they are supplemented by a second guitar and occasional bass and percussion. --Paige La Grone

No More Cocoons

The similarities between former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra and 1950s "sick" comic Lenny Bruce get pretty weird here. Both were bad boys stung by the authorities for taking their satire too far (Bruce for his shooting off his dirty mouth and Biafra for distributing dirty pictures with DK albums). Both also then turned their careers into an increasingly bitter public airing of their own legal hassles and censorship woes. Biafra covers that ground on Cocoons and aims for his favorite target, Tipper Gore's dreaded Parents Music Resource Center. What keeps it entertaining--besides the sheer punk-rock nyah-nyah quality of Biafra's voice--is Biafra's own "sick" humor and his burning intelligence. A little dated, but forever defiant. --Michael Ruby
