Make Believe (Dig)

Taking three-years between albums has made Weezer grow slower and more sober. But on its fifth disc the Los Angeles quartet is no more secure about its place in the world than it was a decade ago in longing tunes like "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here." Singer Rivers Cuomo, still struggling with adolescence at 34, is all apologies. "All I have to do is swing and I'm the hero/ But I'm a zero," he sings on "Perfect Situation," and "I am terrified of all things/ Frightened of the dark," on the lighters-aloft power ballad "Hold Me." The band, meanwhile, keeps things from getting too heavy by punctuating the songs with a familiar rush of bouncy new-wave melodies and fizzing power-pop riffs resulting in the hair-flinging metal of the future D.A.R.E. theme song and album high-point, "We Are All On Drugs." --Aidin Vaziri

country international records

In contrast to the conceptual lo-fi approach of their acclaimed sophomore CD "Introspective Raincoat Student Music" the Sugarplum Fairies' latest release "Country International Records" veers from sleepy shoegaze pop to bouncy D.I.Y. indie rock, all with a subtle infusion of country-noir and the occasional hint of eclectic Vaudeville. For "Country International Records" the Sugarplum Fairies have teamed up with Ken Coomer of Wilco fame and Charlie Brocco (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne).

Darkwater have created a melodic metal masterpiece, with just the right amount of progressive metal influences. If you like melodic metal, and progressive metal bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater and Evergrey, you will most definitely highly appreciate *Calling the earth to witness* Darkwater was formed late 2003 in the western parts of Sweden. During summer and fall 2006, Darkwater recorded and mixed the album, and early 2007 a deal was inked with the Swedish label Ulterium Records. The album was recorded in different studios around in the western parts of Sweden, to reach the highest result possible. The mixing was handled by Peter Saether [A.C.T, Skyfire] at Studio Underground, and the mastering was done by no other than Göran Finnberg [In Flames, The Haunted, Dark Tranquillity etc.] at Mastering Room.

Survivalist Tales!

Emil Amos, world renowned as drummer of the illustrious experimental rock groups Om and Grails, has an increasingly prolific, though relatively unknown, solo career under the moniker Holy Sons. Home recording over 1000 songs since the project's inception in 1992, Amos has spent the better part of the last two decades honing his song writing and production skills over a wide swath of genres in a mission to capture his internal world sonically. Only a handful of shows have ever been played under the name (including opening stints for Quasi, Devendra Banhart, Will Oldham, J Mascis, Daniel Johnson, and a show at a community center in Dharmasala, India) and none of the records have been traditionally promoted, developing a dedicated underground fan-base through word of mouth alone. Survivalist Tales is Holy Sons' 9th record, and represents the apex of Emil Amos' obsession to push stylistic genres to their breaking point while wrenching psyche-anthems out of the darkest frontiers of self-confrontation. The songs are a seemingly impossible blend of nightmarish Blade Runner-esque moog music with the darkest side of 70's easy-listening psyche and feature some of the most unabashedly soaring choruses Amos has ever put to tape. Combining avant-sound collage with lyrics culled from the hard-won truths of self-exploration, Survivalist Tales builds a beautiful imagining of future music. For the first time ever Amos is poised to present the project publicly; this upcoming tour can legitimately be described as Holy Sons first tour.

Through A Faraway Window: A Tribute to Jimmy Silva

The brilliant lyrics and jangling melodies of San Francisco Bay Area native Jimmy Silva are a superb fit for the often-abused tribute album format. Over the course of four luminous solo albums for PopLlama and East Side Digital, Silva would frequently step aside and let the lead-vocal spotlight fall upon singers as diverse as Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels or Bill Jedrzejewski or Kim Wonderley, both members of Silva's final band, the Goats. Jimmy Silva died tragically in Seattle in 1994 at the age of 42 from complications after contracting chicken pox. But his small legion of friends and admirers have never forgotten Silva and his sometimes stirring/often melancholy songs. Like New Testament disciples, they have banded together on From A Faraway Window (SteadyBoy) to celebrate the music their dear friend left behind. Rock journalist Jud Cost and Texas Music Hall of Famer Freddie Steady Krc along with ex-Goats Kim Wonderley and Eric Scott have rounded up selections from Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck of the Minus 5 (and R.E.M.), Jon Auer of the Posies, Roy Loney of the Flamin' Groovies, Freddie Steady Krc of Roky Erickson & the Explosives, Christy McWilson, the Jigsaw Seen, Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels, Dennis Diken of the Smithereens, the Young Fresh Fellows, John Wesley Harding and Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts in a technicolor, extra-large mural depicting the very best material from the haunting catalog of Jimmy Silva.
