Instrumental albums from Walt Disney's mega-empire are a rarity. But judging from the excellence of Disney's Lullaby Album--from the superb arrangements to the surprise song choices--you'll probably be hearing more of them. Producer and arranger Fred Mollin exhibits not only good taste and restraint in his approach, but his song choices sweetly complement one another. Treading the fine line between Muzak and genuinely soothing music, Mollin lands softly and sentimentally on such Disney movie song classics as "Baby Mine," "When You Wish upon a Star," and "Stay Awake/Feed the Birds," as well as on other chestnuts such as "Brahms Lullaby" and Kenny Loggins's "House at Pooh Corner." The real delights, though, are the Beatles' "I Will" (rendered beautifully on piano and strings), Louis Armstrong's timeless "What A Wonderful World," the classic "Beautiful Dreamer," the old doo-wop favorite "Good Night My Love (Pleasant Dreams)," and an inspired reprise of "Brahms Lullaby" joined with Gershwin's "Someone to Watch over Me." Complete with sleeping tips from psychology professor Jodi Mindell, Disney's Lullaby Album almost guarantees that you'll fall asleep before the baby does--for all the right reasons. --Martin Keller

2010 solo album from Nick Jonas, one third of the Jonas Brothers and a huge musical phenomenon. With some downtime in 2009, Nick Jonas took the opportunity to form a side project called Nick Jonas & The Administration, which also includes drummer Michael Bland (Prince, Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men, Rob Thomas), keyboardist Tommy Barbarella (Prince, Switchfoot, Jonny Lang), album-only guitarist David Ryan Harris (John Mayer, Santana) and bassist John Fields (producer of Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Pink) who also produced the CD. Fueling the album's 10 songs was Nick's long-held fascination with politics, especially politics at the top. Throughout, Nick places allusions to the trappings of the Presidency, from the White House Rose Garden to the symbolic olive branch and arrows clutched in the talons of the American eagle (fans will have fun spotting all the clues). But "Who I Am" is not a political album. Rather, through the idiom of Rock and Soul music, it's a survey of the ungovernable human heart.

There are several Cash boxes available, but The Legend--spanning the years 1955-2002 but concentrating on his long tenure at Columbia and, to a lesser degree, his beginnings at Sun--probably belongs at the top of the list. Cash's greatest strengths are dramatized on these four, thematically programmed discs: Win, Place and Show: The Hits; Old Favorites and New; The Great American Songbook (mostly traditional songs); and Family and Friends (collaborations). For starters, consider the staggering depth and breadth of his repertoire (perhaps matched only by those of Bob Dylan and Ray Charles), embracing ancient folk tunes ("Streets of Laredo"), teen pop ("Ballad of a Teenage Queen"), mature contemporary rock ("Highway Patrolman"), gospel ("Were You There When They Crucified My Lord"), topical fare ("Ballad of Ira Hayes"), country standards ("Time Changes Everything"), novelties ("One Piece at a Time"), and more. Then there's the way his spare, spacious sound opens up to take in horns ("Ring of Fire"), strings ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"), anything. The Legend includes seven previously unissued sides, most prominently "It Takes One to Know Me," a stirring salute to his wife June. --John Morthland NOTE: There is also a deluxe limited edition of The Legend, featuring a lithograph, a bonus disc, and a DVD, and housed in a 120-page, 12" x 16" hardcover book.

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt s brand new album, The Open Road. A classic Hiatt record, the rockin songs sizzle with the heat from two-lane blacktop on a summer s day. Hiatt and his touring band (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars) recorded a set that gives Garage Rock a new meaning. All the other years, my songs are about coming home, Hiatt says. But within these 11 new songs including Haulin and the title track The Open Road home is never the destination.

Just in time for the 40th Anniversary, comes Sesame Street Old School Vol. 1, a reissue project to release some of the earliest Sesame Street albums, featuring the original art, and the earliest cast (sorry kids no Elmo here). When Sesame Street first aired on television in 1969, it was a revolutionary new show aimed specifically at preschool children - an audience previously not targeted by television programming. From its earliest planning stages, Sesame Street was designed to be a show that would use music and singing as a part of the material being taught. So it was only natural to release the musical content on records, not only to reinforce the curriculum lessons for children when they weren't watching the show, but also because Sesame Street music is enjoyable just for its own sake. Many of the albums went on to chart on Billboard top album charts and get nominated and win Grammys. Sesame Street: Old School Volume 1 features three of the classic early Sesame Street albums: The Original Cast Record, Big Bird Sings, and Bert & Ernie Sing Along. All albums have been fully remastered, with original artwork. The Original Cast Album, originally released in 1970, peaked at #23 on Billboard's Top LP's chart in 1970, and was certified Gold by the RIAA. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Recording for Children. "Big Bird Sings" was originally released in 1974. "Bert & Ernie Sing Along" was released in 1975 and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording for Children. All titles have never before been available on CD. These CDs are sure to be a hit with parents, collectors, and even kids as the lessons taught then are just as appropriate and the music just as enjoyable.

3 LP set. The most anticipated of the Anthology series, this disc covers what was arguably the Fab Four's most intensely creative period ('65-'67) when they single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Anthology 2 doesn't disappoint. Outtakes and demos show the building of songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," while the pure pop song writing of Rubber Soul and Help! is also documented, along with the sonic experimentation that characterized Revolver. Even if the legendary proto-metal jam of "What's the New Mary Jane" didn't see the light of day here, there is plenty for any Beatles fan. EMI. 2005.
