User Reviews about Jesus Christ Superstar (Original London Concept Recording)

I listened to this over and over the first 2 weeks after it arrived...the quality of the recording is terrific. -- A Blast from my past!
This CD exceeded my expectations. I wanted the original recording that I had when I was a teenager, and was pleased when I found a remastered version. But I was ecstatic when I heard it! The original version and artists, but with a bigger, fuller sound that I never heard on my vinyl album! :-) Isn't technology wonderful? -- fabulous re-mastering!
Since the initial release of the album way back when (1970?), I have always loved this rock opera. In its own crazy way, it's a moving, touching recounting of the last week of our Lord's life. The musical score and the voices are simply amazing, especially Yvonne Elliman's "I don't know how to love Him', & Murray Head's "Superstar". The emotion and power of these two songs is astonishing, just blows you away - I doubt anyone will ever evoke the same feelings as the two of them did in their renditions. My children, and now my grandchildren, all know this musical; we listen to it especially during Holy Week. It's a must-have piece of musical art. -- Stellar opera
It's difficult to describe how great this album is; and I am using "great" in its true sense, meaning something that towers above the rest. You can talk all about how trend-setting the album was, which is true, but for me it's all about the music and the performers. The compositions are incredibly creative, not just because they combine a rock band with a symphony orchestra. They weave in and out of moods and colors, with time signatures and harmonies changing all over the place.

Yeah, "I Don't Know How to Love Him" is kind of cheesy, but so what. It sets a mood and makes a statement, which is what a song in a play is supposed to do. And, as a musician who has performed in several productions, I find that sometimes it seems like the orchestra is occasionally not really needed, and ALW just gave it something to do.

But those minor drawbacks are forgiven when you listen to the complete score. The rock tunes are outstanding; I often think that if you know someone who doesn't like rock, you should have them listen to this album. The drive, the melodies, the incredible vocals are all there. If nothing else, this album can serve as a primer on how to play rock music, and shows why some music needs to be outrageously loud in order to be valid.

And then there's the story, which, if taken for what it is, can be deeply affecting. It definitely opened up my eyes to these religious, historical people and made me ask more questions.

Long story short, I've been listening to this music for almost 40 years and still find it vastly entertaining and good. You'll do yourself a favor by adding this album to your collection. -- Simply brilliant music and performances
